Poetry reading at the Carolina Youth Development center

Here are some photos from my reading at the Carolina Youth Development Center. I lead the kids in a chant of “ooooh weeeee!” and read lyrics to popular songs. The first song I read was “Let it Go” from the Frozen soundtrack. I then did “Love Never Felt So Good” and “Beat It” by MJ, as requested by the kids.

The reading was a part of the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® program, which stresses the importance of literature. I was asked to share my story, so (of course) I brought a Prince album and told them about how I read the lyrics of the songs on the vinyl sleeve when I was a kid.

It was a wonderful morning …
