Poet in residence at Zero George
August 4, 2018
I was the poet in residence at the lovely Zero George, a stunning hotel and restaurant in downtown Charleston. I connected with the Zero George staff over an encouraging and honest conversation about making sure that spaces like this feel … open. And welcoming.
Earlier this year, I did a poetry reading and workshop at their space. It was wonderful.
We came up with the idea to do a one-night residency where I write poetry for the hotel’s guests. I printed out a questionnaire for the front desk. Guests answered the questions and I wrote a poem based off of their notes.
The hotel and atmosphere are IMMACULATE. Seriously. Zero George is one of the best places I’ve ever stayed. The staff is wonderful. Jordan and I LOVED our room and really enjoyed the bar and dinner. (especially the bar. I’m a sucker for gin).
I’m so thankful for experiences like this. As poet laureate of the lowcountry, I often find myself in spaces that I never thought I’d be. Poetry is a flexible art form … it’s a fun challenge to figure out how to fit poems in spaces like Zero George. I hope more hotels follow suit.
